A new frontier in understanding electron dynamics: imaging with attosecond short X-ray flashes

A team of researchers from the University of Hamburg and collaborators has achieved a breakthrough by capturing images of individual nanoparticles using single X-ray attosecond pulses. This advancement, which has been published in Nature Communications, sets the stage for high-resolution snapshots of dynamic phenomena such as chemical reactions and phase transitions, with an unprecedented temporal precision.

PanK4 Identified as Regulator of Glucose and Lipid Metabolism

Physical activity is not only important for fitness but also for overall health. This is confirmed by a new study conducted under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Maximilian Kleinert at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke (DIfE). His team identified PanK4 as a key regulator of energy metabolism in skeletal muscle, regulating glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation and being activated by physical exercise. The study suggests that PanK4 could be a promising approach for treating metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications.

In the face of growing global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and threats to democratic values, traditional behavioral policy approaches are increasingly coming into question. The once-dominant nudging approach, which seeks to "nudge" people toward better decisions, has been criticized for, among other things, not sufficiently promoting individual autonomy. In response, boosts are gaining importance. These interventions are designed to enhance individuals' decision-making and self-control skills, as scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development explain in the Annual Review of Psychology—one of psychology’s most cited journals.

Evolutionary adaptations have enabled the fruit fly Drosophila busckii to detect and thrive on toxic food sources.

Evolutionäre Anpassungen ermöglichen es der Taufliege Drosophila busckii giftige Nahrungsquellen aufzuspüren und zu nutzen. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena have discovered that the fruit fly Drosophila busckii has developed a tolerance to the toxic sulfur compound dimethyldisulfide (DMDS). Drosophila busckii could be a useful model to study the evolution of resistance to toxic gases and to shed light on ecological adaptations.

Not only during application times: pesticide mixtures are present in soil and plants all year round

In conventional agriculture, synthetic chemical pesticides are used in various crops such as arable farming, vegetable growing and viticulture. A study by the RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau, recently published in the journal “Scientific Reports”, is the first to examine pesticide contamination over the course of a year. It shows that substances can be detected not only during the spraying periods in the fields, but also throughout the year and in adjacent meadows. The impact of these chronically detected complex pesticide mixtures on the environment has not been sufficiently investigated and could be significant.

First AR-based Fraunhofer app developed at Fraunhofer HHI

The augmented reality app DEVA (Dynamic Exposure Visualization App) from the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) is now available for free in the Google Play Store and Apple Store. The app enables users to visualize air pollution and other environmental data in their surroundings in real time. Using AR visualizations such as floating particles, it displays pollutants like CO2, NO2, and particulate matter directly in the three-dimensional space around the user's location. The goal is to raise awareness of local environmental conditions.
