Even before the outbreak of the pandemic, digitalisation was said by the German government to be one of the most important tasks of the future, but of course there has been a rapid increase in investment and the establishment of digital structures in all areas of day-to-day life since the start of the pandemic. One of the biggest transformations can be observed in the educational and research sector.

Mobile platforms have given more people access to online learning. In the coming years, online learning will include more elements such as blended & virtual learning and virtual reality (VR).

A successful digital learning strategy might include aspects regarding the effective use of technology and new classroom technologies, as well as organisational and pedagogical issues

Watch the recording of our online talk on "Digital Learning" and learn what the experts said about current developments on this topic in the German research landscape.

The online talk "Digital Learning" took place:
Monday, 6 December 2021, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm (CET)

Hosted by:
Silvia Schmid, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Panellists:

Dr. Christian Weber, researcher at the Faculty of Knowledge Based Systems and Knowledge Management, University of Siegen and project coordinator at Oeduverse, University of Siegen
Dr. Weber received a Marie Curie early researcher scholarship as part of the Eduworks doctoral network as a researcher at the Corvinno Technology Transfer Center and Filab in Budapest and graduated as a PhD from the Corvinus University, Budapest. Within his PhD he was working on developing semantic and structure-aware concept importance measures for domain knowledge to guide digital learning.
The University of Siegen (USI) is a modern institution consisting of five faculties, which run a broad spectrum of degree programs, including arts, technologies, natural sciences, computing, economics, management, law and education and medicine. USI has 171 international partnerships and 161 ERASMUS partner universities across Europe. The USI Institute of Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science – participates in the Odeuverse consortium. KBS holds long-term expertise in European, national and industry funded projects in the domain of applied knowledge management and especially intelligent systems, machine learning, and supported educational projects in the domain of doctoral and post-doctoral and nursing education. USI is the coordinator of the Oeduverse project and will manage and coordinate the project towards a new vision of doctoral education. Content-wise, USI will support the Open Science education track and advocates for sustainable research career management.

Prof. Dr. Michael Hofmann, professor at the Institute for German Language and Comparative Literature, Paderborn University and leader of the IVAC funded project "International digital research training group Paderborn-Europe-Africa".
Dr. Swen Schulte Eickholt, research associate, Institute for German Language and Comparative Literature and coordinator of the IVAC project, Paderborn University

Paderborn University is a young and thriving university that conducts excellent research within five key research areas. A wide range of research activities in all faculties are performed with a high level of interdisciplinarity and internationality. Paderborn University is embedded in an innovative and dynamic business environment in the region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe, which engenders numerous cross-sector collaborations with benefits for researchers and the regional economy.

DAAD funding programme: International Virtual Academic Collaboration (IVAC) The current crisis has forced universities and research organisations to dynamically expand their capabilities in the fields of digital learning and working. Virtual exchange represents an interactive and cooperation-based bridge to the world and serves to systematically intensify international higher education efforts and shape them around new models of (blended) mobility.  With the call for applications to International Virtual Academic Collaboration (IVAC), the DAAD wishes to provide practical support to instructors and strategic support to universities with the aim of developing and expanding international higher education partnerships and worldwide mobility by tapping digital possibilities.

Rasmus Benke-Aberg, program-manager for international and european cooperation, Stifterverband, Hochschulforum Digitalisierung
