Promoting and supporting collaboration with partners from around the globe is a top priority for Germany. Thus, it offers unique opportunities and funding for international cooperation. That’s why researchers and innovators in Germany have the freedom to cooperate with their preferred partners from all over the world.
For our special issue, we have visited international researchers at German universities and research institutions. They provide exciting insights into their projects with international partners. Moreover, we have compiled a selection of funding programmes that support international cooperation in research and innovation.

ERC Synergy Grant
ERC Synergy Grants are awarded to groups of two to four outstanding researchers of any nationality. They can be at the start of their careers or established researchers and should bring together complementary skills to address research problems that could lead to breakthroughs not possible by the individual researchers working alone. Applications can be made in any field of research.
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks support the implementation of transnational doctoral programmes by consortia of organisations from academic and non-academic sectors across Europe and beyond. PhD candidates of any nationality can apply for positions especially created by these networks. They receive a high-quality doctoral training to improve their career opportunities.
EIC Pathfinder
The EIC Pathfinder funds visionary and high-risk projects of interdisciplinary research teams from Europe and beyond which aim at scientific breakthroughs in future technologies. The programme offers grants of up to 4 million euro for the early stages of technology development up to achieving a “proof of principle”.
Focus on SME
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are the backbone of Germany’s economy. In order to strengthen their innovation capacity and competitiveness, Germany offers a lot of support for SME to establish collaborations with international partners. SME are not only eligible to participate in most transnational calls for R&D projects. There are also dedicated funding programmes to foster cross-border collaborations of innovative SME. Two examples are Eurostars and ZIM International.
