In brief

Leibniz Junior Research Groups offer talented and promising early career researchers an opportunity to conduct independent research, employ their own staff and work with excellent equipment and infrastructures. Successful candidates are enabled to set up their own research group in the inspiring research environment of a Leibniz institute.

Who can apply?

Postdoctoral researchers who

  • have completed their doctorate no longer than 5 years ago (exceptions apply)
  • have proven outstanding academic achievements in their field and
  • are planning to conduct an independent research project

Type and extent of funding

Funding: successful candidates will receive funding of up to 1.7 million euros. The funding goes towards the establishment of a junior research group with personnel costs (group leader, 2 to 3 doctoral candidates or postdoc group members) and adequate equipment and facilities.

5 years.

Calls can be found on the Leibniz Association’s website (see link below). Candidates are asked to contact the
Leibniz institute of their choice with a draft of their application to discuss their project and its fit within the institute’s research strategy.
