What is it?
The online series is designed for master's graduates, PhD candidates, and postdocs from all disciplines worldwide who are interested in pursuing research careers or opportunities in Germany. Various speakers will share their unique experiences as international researchers in Germany, discussing obstacles they faced, their success stories, and offering practical tips. At the end of each session, you will have the opportunity to ask your own questions.

Dr. Ana Alonso Serrano got her PhD in 2015 in the Complutense University of Madrid, since then she had postodoctoral contracts in Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) and Charles University of Prague (Czech Republic). After this experience she came to Germany with an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship to work in the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, extending her stay there with a couple of postdoctoral contracts. Last year she joined the Humboldt University of Berlin thanks to a DFG grant to pursue her project.
She is also very involved in science communication, mainly trough her participation in Soapbox Science and AuthentiSci teams, and she is an advocate for equity and diversity in academia.
Dr.Ishanka Chathurani Karunarathne is a recipient of DAAD scholarship, and she obtained her PhD from the University of Goettingen, Germany, Master of Science in Management from University of Sri Jayawardenepura, and Bachelors of Business Management Degree from University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Currently, she is serving as a senior lecturer attached to the Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. She holds many administrative positions in the University and since 2022 she has been serving as a DAAD research ambassador. Her main research interest lie in cross-cultural management, withdrawal and wellbeing. She has published a number of research papers in top-tier journals and conferences.
Dr. Milind Brahme is an Associate Professor of German in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at IIT Madras. With over 25 years of teaching and research experience, Dr. Brahme has established himself as a distinguished scholar and educator in the fields of German language and literature, literary theory, pedagogy, rhetoric, and communication. He is fluent in Marathi, Hindi, English, and German.
Dr. Brahme holds an MA, MPhil, and PhD in German from the Centre of German Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). His extensive academic background is complemented by a significant record of guiding PhD research, with four completed theses under his supervision and two more co-guided in diverse fields such as sociology, English literature, and German literature. Currently, he is guiding five more doctoral students in areas including sociology of education, environmental education, and literature/aesthetics.
From 2008 to 2016, Dr. Brahme coordinated the monitoring of the Government of India’s Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Tamil Nadu and conducted independent research on ICT in school education in the state. He also performed evaluation studies on pedagogical innovations for both private and government institutions in Tamil Nadu.
Dr. Brahme's academic excellence is recognized by several distinctions:
- UGC Research Fellow at JNU (1990-1995)
- DAAD Sandwich Model Fellowship for Doctoral Research at Uni Göttingen (1994-1995)
- Franz Werfel Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Alpen Adria Universität Klagenfurt, Austria (May-December 2005)
In terms of international cooperation, Dr. Brahme has coordinated student-faculty exchange programs with Hochschule Bremen and conducted research on MGML Pedagogies and Inclusive Education with the University of Würzburg. This collaboration resulted in the first World Conference on MGML Pedagogies at IIT Madras in 2016 and a publication on Inclusive Education in India in 2018. He currently serves as the DAAD Research Ambassador for Humanities, Social Sciences, and Language (2022-2025).
